Automating Bill Payments Is a Trap for Anyone Trying to Actually Control Their Money

Setting bills to autopay feels like progress, but it can quietly erode your sense of what money is coming in and going out each month.

I think letting your bills autopay is overrated. It makes every expense invisible and pushes you further from the reality of your cash flow, especially if you’re trying to build new habits or pay off debt. I want to see each charge and tap ‘pay’ myself, even if it takes extra time, because friction means I’m more conscious and less likely to overspend. Passive systems breed passive thinking.
