Why MemberPad Is Staying Small (On Purpose): A Note From the Team About How We Build

We could raise a massive round and try to become the biggest community platform in the world. We are doing the opposite. Here is why, what it means for you, and what you can expect from us over the next year.

Why MemberPad Is Staying Small (On Purpose): A Note From the Team About How We Build

Every so often, we get an email that goes something like this: "Love your platform. When are you raising a big round? When are you going to compete with the big guys?"

We want to answer that question today, publicly, with the people who use MemberPad every day. Because it deserves a real answer, and because our answer has direct implications for how you experience MemberPad over the next several years.

Here it is: we are not raising a big round. We are not trying to out-scale the largest community platforms in the world. We are staying small on purpose.

This is not a marketing slogan. It is a decision we have made deliberately, and it shapes how we build, what we charge, who we hire, and what we say no to. If you are a MemberPad creator, you should understand it.

What "staying small on purpose" actually means

When we say we are staying small, we do not mean we are not growing. We are growing, quite healthily. We added more creators in the last six months than in any prior six-month stretch. We are hiring carefully. Our community of paying creators is bigger than it has ever been.

What we mean by "staying small" is this:

  • We are building MemberPad as a durable, profitable, independent company, not a venture-scale company.

  • We are not raising capital that forces us to chase a $1 billion exit.

  • We are keeping the team lean enough that the people who build MemberPad still know our creators by name.

  • We are measuring our success in how long our creators stay and thrive, not in how fast we can move upmarket.

There is a specific kind of software company this produces. It is the kind where the product stays focused instead of getting stuffed with features to justify a new funding round. It is the kind where the price stays reasonable instead of climbing every year to meet growth targets. It is the kind where customer support is answered by people who can actually fix things. It is the kind that still exists in ten years.

That is the kind of company we want to be.

Why we are making this choice

Community platforms are strange. They hold some of the most meaningful digital spaces in their creators' lives. A membership platform is not a todo app. It is someone's livelihood, someone's readers, someone's hard-won reputation, someone's entire business. Trust matters. Stability matters. Continuity matters.

The history of venture-backed community platforms is not kind. Many of them launched, grew fast, raised huge rounds, changed direction, raised more, struggled to justify their valuation, pivoted, and eventually forced their creators to migrate elsewhere. Sometimes they were acquired and gutted. Sometimes they just shut down. Every time, creators who had trusted them paid the price.

We do not want to be that story. We do not want to be a platform that creators love in 2026 and abandon in despair in 2029.

The way to avoid that story is to not set ourselves up for it in the first place. Profitable, independent, focused, slow-growing companies do not collapse in the same ways. They might grow slower. They might pass on loud product categories that do not fit. They might miss some trends. But they endure. And endurance is what community creators need from their platform more than anything else.

What this means for pricing

We get this question a lot, so we want to answer it directly.

We will always try to make MemberPad affordable for the creators who are earliest in their journey. Our current pricing is not a promotional loss-leader. It is the actual price we need to run a sustainable business. That means we do not plan to raise prices on a regular schedule, and we do not plan to surprise you with gated features you already use.

We also do not have a hidden playbook to move upmarket and quietly price out our smaller creators. Smaller creators are the heart of MemberPad. When we look at the communities that have stayed with us the longest, they are rarely the biggest ones. They are the ones with 200, 500, 1,000 engaged members and a founder who shows up every week. Those creators built MemberPad. We are not going to abandon them.

If we ever need to change our pricing meaningfully, we will tell you directly, well in advance, and we will not make it weird. That is our commitment.

What this means for features

A lean, independent company cannot build every feature. We have to pick.

Our guiding question for any new feature is a simple one: "Does this help creators run healthier, more sustainable communities?" If yes, we build it. If it is a flashy feature that would sound good on a press release but would make MemberPad more complicated for you to use, we do not.

This is why we have been deliberate about AI features, for example. We have shipped the ones that actually help (summarizing long threads for new members, drafting welcome replies, flagging potentially toxic posts for your review). We have not shipped the ones that just look impressive (AI-generated "engagement" posts that pretend to be from your members, AI-powered manipulation of member attention, gamification scores designed to inflate activity metrics).

The line we will not cross is anything that makes your community less honest. Your members can tell. They always can.

What this means for support

We read every support ticket. Every one.

Our support team is small on purpose, and the people who answer tickets are empowered to actually fix things, not just route them. If you email support and get a response, it is from a human who works at MemberPad and has likely already been in your community to look at the issue.

As we grow, we intend to preserve that. We would rather answer slightly slower with a real human than instantly with a chatbot that makes you want to throw your laptop.

What this means for our roadmap

Our roadmap is not a secret. We publish it. We update it quarterly. We say no to things publicly when we decide not to build them. We say "not for a while" when we mean it.

The pace is deliberate. We ship fewer things than the loudest platforms, and we ship them with fewer bugs. We would rather release a feature in July that works beautifully than release it in April and spend six months apologizing. That is partly because we are lean. It is mostly because we like doing good work.

What we ask of you

One of the unusual things about a company like ours is that our relationship with our creators is more of a partnership than a transaction. We are not your vendor. We are the infrastructure underneath some of the most important work you do. That comes with a certain kind of responsibility on our end, and it comes with a small favor we ask of you.

Tell us the truth. When we ship something that does not work, tell us. When we make a change that breaks your workflow, tell us. When you need something and it is not there, tell us. When a competitor does something well, tell us. The worst thing you can do for a small, independent platform is to quietly give up on us. We would much rather hear a hard truth in a support ticket than find out six months later you migrated because something small was annoying.

We will answer. We may not always agree. But we will always take you seriously.

What you can expect from us over the next year

In plain language: more focused product updates, steady pricing, and a continued commitment to being findable by real humans. We are not going to chase the trends. We are not going to announce a dramatic pivot. We are going to keep building the same calm, reliable, creator-first platform you signed up for, and we are going to keep getting better at it.

There are very few software companies that operate this way. We are choosing to be one. Not because it is the fastest path, but because it is the one that lets us keep our word to the creators who trusted us with their communities.

Thank you for being one of them.

We will be here for a long, long time. That is the whole plan.

Put it into practice.
